My experiences this past month of travelling/competing 2/2
I also met up with a buddy of mine Chris who I've known since middle school that i met online, so that was pretty cool to finally meet him and chill and stuff.
Me and kevin didnt see much in Orange County really as far as sights and attractions go. But i had an amazing time there and cant wait to go back for Worlds in June.
I left for the airport sunday evening and said bye to kevin and wished him luck and all that stuff for him at Abu Dhabi. He's fighting this week and has to drop down to 149.9lb which isnt the easiest of cuts for him. But i know he'll make the weight and put on his BEST performance to date.
I just boarded onto this plane to Atlanta. I should maybe wrap this post up. Fortunately im about done ^^!!
This experience was amazing and I cant wait to get back to training to only evolve my game further and continue living my dream and making my many dreams come true.
I've made many dreams come true, but I have so many more to chase.

My experiences this past month of travelling/competing 1/2
I feel that nows a good time to make a post about my experiences the past month or so of travelling and competing.
In the past month of travelling i have had some all-time high's and some unfortunate lows in competition.
On March 24th i flew out to Krakow, Poland to compete in the 3rd FILA World Grappling Championships as part of the Usa national grappling team. I didnt know what to expect, i just reminded myself that being part of this tournament and this experience is huge already. FILA's ruleset for Grappling will most likely be the ruleset that will be the official olympic rules once Grappling becomes an official olympic sport. So when FILA hosts these world championships, countries from all over the world come out to fight. This year there were a record number of countries attending this year. One fighter from each country fought in each weight class. My division was 65kg gi, which wasnt an easy weight for me to make. But i made it with the help of Coach Sheldon. I weighed in Friday and was scheduled to fight on sunday so I decided to scout my competition saturday during the no-gi day. It was amazing to see how this sport has really separated itself from jiu jitsu and american wrestling. There were fighters from all different walks of grappling arts. You had high level Sambo guys catching Jiu jitsu guys. Catch wrestlers footlocking the shit out of sambo fighters. It was nice to see and it openned my eyes to the possibilities of this young sport. When sunday came around I was obviously nervous, not sure how things would turn out but a big part of me knew I had the skills to go out there and perform to the best of my abilities. I saw my buddy and training partner Din lose his 1st fight right before my 1st fight and it kinda woke me up about how careful i gotta be with the rules and etc. The ruleset could fuck over jiu jitsu guys if they arent careful. So i stayed sharp and my first fight was against a tough Sambo fighter from Azerbaijan. I stayed sharp and won the fight a couple minutes in. Between fights i chilled in sitting split with my chest on the floor, its a powerful yoga stretch my dad always has us do in his yoga class. I told myself that i need this and thought of all the positive energy my friends and family are throwing my way. When my second match came around against Mongolia, i felt dominant. Played a smothering top game, but match went to overtime. Was really close, i got the sweep in the last 20 seconds and won. Before the finals i remember listening to Minus the Bear - Throwin Shapes and the best part came on right as it was time for me to step on to the mat. I remember throwing the headphones off as I was walking onto the mat for the finals. My final fight was against Poland, which put together a tough team since we were in their country. The match starts and i get a point for a sweep right away and play more of my top game. It turns into a butterfly defense match. At one point i got caught in a slick armbar and scrambled harder than i have ever scrambled to get out of a armbar and survived and landed into side briefly. I rode this guy out and won in an intense as hell fight. Was my biggest win to date and it felt great. Afterwards while eatting with the team and etc i remember feeling more motivated than ever to improve and just perform 10x better next time.
After the tournament was done I stayed in Poland for an extra 3 days or so to see the city and etc. It was really nice, i stayed in a hostel which was interesting. I saw auschwitz which was something i knew i had to see if Im in Poland. Then i just hung around the city center and sampled all the tasty foods that Poland had to offer for me. I went shopping and got me some nice polishy clothes lol. I could of seen more sights and etc but I just wanted to relax and see the city and come home. I was real homesick, i just wanted to come home and celebrate with friends and family.
When i came back home i was thinking maybe everyone forgot about my win in Poland or something. That wasnt the case at all, everyone was real happy to see me and congratulated me. My instructor and training partners were all proud of me, and it felt great. I missed all my friends and family so much.

Grappling World Championships Dec 11th-13th
My first match was pretty even, I went for a balls out flying armbar and almost had it and at the end of the round the score was tied 1-1. We went to overtime and I went for another balls out flying armbar and just held it for the entire overtime, I started screaming while i was holding it cause i was getting so tired. I ended up winning the match ^^!!!
My dad then came to me, he saw the match so that was cool, he was all happy for me and gave me some special drinks and food to eat and drink which really re-energized me and filled my tank back up.
My second match was coming up against the guy who won the trials earlier in the year. He was a stud wrestler who was also a black belt in jiu jitsu. We had a pretty sick match going on, I was able to get him to closed guard without losing any points and I had him in a triangle for a little while there. He ended up passing my guard due to a ballsy sweep I was going for, its alright though. I ended up replacing and the match ended 2-1 for Tom Lecuyer. I have mad respect for that guy, tough as they come.
After that match I found out that I'm up for Repecharge or whatever its called. Which is basically where you fight for 3rd and 4th. So I was set to face the other guy that Tom beat and he was being cool with me and telling me what the French guy likes and what I should watch out for and etc. So that was mad straight of him.
There was a big break between finals and repecharge. So we all went to a pizza place and ate some tasty brick oven pizza, bread and a salad. Which was just what I needed ;D!!!
We then went back to the warm up area and it was completely empty so we just slept on the mats for a couple hours until they were about to start up again.
So my match was against the french guy Karim Saki was his name. Shark came from the belt testing and was all happy for me that I was in the finals section and was showing me a bunch of stuff to try and do. So I was telling him my gameplan and my energy just went up. It was great having him there helping me out with my gameplan and having his enthusiasm, got me all pumped up and ready to go.
When I went in there I looked around while I was on the raised stage, took it all in and was ready to go. We started the match and I was working to try and get to guard without having to lose a point. I failed at that lol, got to closed guard but he got the point. Almost the whole match he was working for a leg lock on me and I kept defending then when match was almost over he held me in his closed guard mad tight. I remember Shark told me before that match "remember to go out of bounds when you're in trouble." So I got up and took him out of bounds on purpose. They then reset us in open guard and there were less then 10 seconds left. I went to half guard and stayed madddddd tight and passed to mount the last couple of seconds. The ref put up his hand for the points right as the buzzer went off. I looked and saw that I got the points. I fucking lost it after that man.. I got up and started screaming at the top of my lungs and the crowd was just feeding my energy. I was yelling so much and man it was awesome... Greatest win out of any of my fights by far....
So I got 3rd in No-Gi in the worlds biggest grappling tournament for trying to get the sport into the olympics. I feel honored just competing in this tournament... People came up to me just congratulating me and saying there all big fans of my matches and etc. THEN Shark called me to the side and pulled out a purple belt and slapped that shit onto my waist and was like "ya.. I dont think you need to test.". Perfect time... Day before gi and everything. One of the best days of my life.
That was just No-Gi day. I get home at 12 or so then sleep by 1 to get ready to do it allll over again on sunday lol.. I thought it was USA vs Brazil or whatever, but apparently thats like a separate thing that they were doing in between the gi tournament. So Sunday is just like no-gi except with a gi on pretty much.
First guy I'm facing in gi is a black belt, this guy Rudy who i think placed 3rd in the trials. He's a real nice guy who came up to me and said he was a big fan of all my matches and etc. I was telling my self that I have nothing to lose in this match since im just a fresh purple and all these guys in my weight are black belts and shit.
So I'm talking to Shark and we come up with a sharp gameplan to beat this guy. So the match started and I am just frustrating this guy stnading and stuffing his attempts at takedowns. I push him out of bounds enough times and got a point. That frustrated him enough to where he pulled guard and gave me another point, and I just stayed tight and stood up when I could and ended up winning the match by points. The guy was mad cool and he knew I played a smart gameplan and hopefully wasn't to upset over it. He was a good guy, I hope for nothing but success in this guys future fights.
Shark was mad happy with my gameplan and etc. My next match is against Renato Tavares so I'm talking to Shark about a smart gameplan to beat this guy. I take my dads concoctions and special snacks lol. That shit re-energized me right away lol.
So when im walking on the mat to face Renato I was pretty nervous at first but man I just told myself, "I just have to stick to my gameplan and I know I can beat this guy using the rules to my advantage." So the match starts and im just playing tight and tryign to grip fight with him. It's hard grip fighting with a guy so experienced. His grip felt so deadly, he kept trying to judo throw and sweep me. It wasn't working though, I kept trying to circle around him and push him out of bounds. I think he knew what I was up to from seeing my last match and set me up dirty. He let me push him back and got me in a dirty Judo throw. He then got my back from there and was setting up a choke, I defended well and when he went to mount I went to half-guard and started replacing. He then passed and went for an armbar, a tight one. I defended that shit textbook and got back into his closed guard which gave me a point, then I started fighting to get back up to my feet. He caught me in a beautiful cross sweep variation and I started trying to work de la riva then he backed up and I got up and went for a flying armbar and he just backed up and I held on to the sleeve and faced him and got up and ran towards him for the takedown and the buzzer went off... It was a tough match... Im happy I survived against Renato in a gi lol.. That guys a Jiu jitsu legend, all the Brazilians respect that guy like Liborio and shit..
After that I found out that I'm facing the French guy Saki I beat for 3rd and 4th again. So I know that hes mad pumped up to try and beat me. So I'm just resting up and drinking a lot of my dads concoctions.
I talked to Shark and our plan was to do the same game plan. I was feeling him out a lot and he must of seen my match against Rudy to lol.. Cause he threw me with the same exact sweep that Renato got me with earlier that day. So he got points for that shit, so thats a little frustrating. I'm circling with him and he got me with the same throw but I got up right away and he went for a takedown and I defended and pushed him out of bounds. So I feel like I'm losing time here so I go for a flying armbar and almost had it. I lost it and he was holding on to my leg to go for another straight leg lock. I slipped my leg through to the triangle and got that shit tight. Saki got up and deliberately walked out of bounds, so the ref called the match there and said it was a catch. I completely forgot about that rule lol.. But man it felt good to get the win via submission even if it wasn't technically a tap ^^!! So that sealed the deal for 3rd place Gi 66kg.
It felt good to be on that podium with all those tough guys... My dad was there to and mad happy for me so thats really cool that he was there. My moms upset that she didnt come but its alright I know that she was super exhausted with everything thats been going on with her and etc. Liborio was mad proud of me to saying stuff like "2.. you have nooo idea how proud I am of you, I am soo proud of you!". It was an honor to receive so much praise from so many of world class coaches. Shark was mad happy for me to.
Great weekend, great tournament. I think I qualify for next years championships not sure.. but im part of the team man, top 3 in the world gi and no gi!!!! I feel great man.. I really stepped it up and put myself out there and im mad happy... One of the best weekends of my life..
